Grace
"The most amazing thing happened yesterday, really one of those "meant to be" situations we see so often in rescue. Through a series of odd coincidences, this lady called us yesterday .. she had just had to have her elderly Golden put to sleep, is grieving hard, and thru some mutual acquaintance of our daughter, learned we were fostering a puppy. My husband left me a long message to call her when I got back in. I did, spoke to both husband and wife, learned that the Golden they had so recently lost had been adopted from NRGRR 8 years ago, so that was a big plus for them right away. They asked if they could come right over and meet Natalie (Grace), and of course I said yes. They were here in 20 minutes (they live in north Raleigh and we are in south Raleigh closer to Cary) and check this out: when they came up to the glass front door, Natalie was standing there smiling and wagging her tail. She almost immediately went to Nancy the wife, even jumped up on the couch next to her and gave her a kiss! No submissive peeing or signs of fear! Duke and I were shocked, but as we so often see, it's best to let the dog select their new owner. They have no other dogs currently, have an acre lot in a great section of town, have invisible fence as we do. They want a dog to be with them all the time, will let her sleep with them if she wants to. Ha! Very attractive couple in their late 40s I'd guess and if things go smoothly with Natalie (whose name they will be changing by the way), they will likely get another dog as a companion for her, which I think would be wise.
So ... we had to get a new application from them and that is being processed now, they want me to keep her thru spaying which I am happy to do, but I really think we've found the right people for Natalie. I sent them the Saving Grace video and I'm sure it touched them. Just amazing how puppy took to these people at once cuz she has met other visitors who dropped by and, though she was friendly and all, she was not wanting them to touch her at all. I'll let you know as things progress, but I knew you'd be happy to hear this news about little sweet girl. She knows "sit" and "come" now .. still resists leash walking and I don't know what it will take, but I think these folks, Jim and Nancy Craig, will take her to obedience school which would probably be smart." -- Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue
Sam and Butch
Sam and Butch, 11-month old Russian Blues, were surrendered to the shelter by their owner who suddenly decided he didn't want them anymore. They handled their abandonment with courage and grace, never showing fear or distress at the shelter. PAWS desperately wanted these boys to stay together, and thanks to Dennis and Wayne, they are now home to stay. Even Termite, the Cat Who Was Here First has begrudgingly agreed to the new guys in the house! The Blues Brothers aren't blue anymore.
Avery
This is Savannah, known as Avery during her shelter stay. Avery spent weeks at the shelter before being treated for heartworms by the PAWS Second Chance Fund. Two young Ahoskie girls, Hennie Larabee and Elizabeth Joyner raise money to help treat highly adoptable shelter dogs for heartworms, something that PAWS cannot afford to do since the treatment is hundreds of dollars. Under the supervision of Stephanie Holt, Hennie and Elizabeth do yard sales, bake sales, and car washes to raise money for this fund. As this picture shows, Avery, now known as Savannah, has been adopted and is now living the good life with her new family on the Chesapeake Bay! Can you imagine what it is like for her. . . from a lonely, scary shelter kennel to. . . a walk on the beach!!!
Quincy
After many weeks in a shelter cage, growing more and more depressed each day, Quincy finally found his dream home just down the road in Murfreesboro. All reports are that he is now enjoying the good life as an indoor/outdoor cat. Thank-you to Quincy's adopters for making this big boy so happy!
Newbie, now Frank
Newbie had lived all his life in a home. One terrible day, an animal control truck pulled up and carried him away to the shelter. Once a member of a family, Newbie now was homeless, living in a shelter kennel, frightened and homesick. It was soon discovered that on top of all his other woes, Newbie was heartworm positive. A fund was begun to pay for treatment, because Newbie was such a great dog. Treatment was successful, but there was still no home for Newbie. Until one day, a recent college grad decided he wanted a dog for graduation! He saw Newbie and it was love at first sight. Newbie, now Frank, is enjoying the good life! Frank lives inside with his new "Dad" and even has his own bbq sauce named after him. Frank's life couldn't be any better! He is loved more than you can imagine.
